Leveraging Digital Signage for More Than Patient Education and Marketing – Real Service Improvement

Earlier in the week I was in a waiting room for a physician visit and as I sat there for much longer than I wanted, I kept wondering "what patient number am I and how many people will be seen before me?" Given that we are in the trailing days of the year 2012 with some significantly advanced technology at our fingertips it bothered me even more that there was no way to know what was going on without asking the front desk receptionist every five minutes. The irony was that this facility had a large screen monitor (called "digital ... READ MORE

The Benefits and Challenges of EHR Software

At first glance the benefits of a medical facility or office deploying electronic health records software, or EHR, for its record keeping are obvious and abundant. A stack of hard drives containing electronic records takes up far less floor space than a room full of filing cabinets, they're easier to organize and search and can be transferred between facilities instantaneously online as opposed to the cumbersome process of faxing/scanning physical records back and forth. Despite that, however, overall proliferation of EHR/EMR software is extremely low. A 2008 survey conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine found that out of a ... READ MORE

Ad-Supported Software Is Here to Stay

During my research for our series on free software, I encountered a number of successful companies offering free solutions through an ad-supported business model. The ad-supported model is a departure from traditional propriety software licenses and the monthly subscriptions fees used by SaaS providers. These companies operate by attracting large user bases and charging potential advertisers a fixed price per ad impression (basically a page view). According to the San Francisco Chronicle, this number is as much as $200 per thousand impressions in Practice Fusion, a popular EMR and practice management solution, and $100 in Spiceworks, a free IT management/help ... READ MORE

What Is Health Data Management Software?

Information management and the paper trail is a vital function for any organization, but especially so at a medical office. The reasons are obvious: a medical clinic or hospital has to deal not only with standard logistical concerns like inventory and accounting, but the physical well being of its clients as well. Health data management software is geared towards managing the records of up-to-date data on individual patients and groups at a medical facility including everything from essential items like vitals, allergies and blood type to more long-term items like medical and treatment histories. Sorting Out the Terminology Making sense of this software ... READ MORE

The Best Free EMR Software

A few years back when the first free EMR services debuted in the market, many physicians viewed them with suspicion and got hung up trying to answer the question, “What’s the catch?” Their concerns revolved around security, stability, certification, support, and plain old legitimacy. Today it’s impossible to ignore free EMR. Whether ad-supported or open source, a handful of vendors are leveling the medical software playing field by adding competitive free EMR/practice management solutions to a market characterized by costly software. Not only is free EMR free, but it can actually help you earn money. Thanks to a stimulus package passed ... READ MORE
