The best ERP for your wholesale distribution business depends on which retail trading partners you serve and how complex your warehouse operations are. If you supply Coles, Woolworths, or David Jones, Pronto Xi is the only mid-market vendor that names those partners in its own documentation and handles EDIFACT conversion via VAN. If you run advanced bin tracking and directed put-away, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central can deliver it, but only with a separate WMS granule and Premium licensing. For distributors that need strong Australian payroll, BAS, and STP Phase 2 out of the box, MYOB Acumatica offers native compliance. NetSuite suits multi-entity importers that need cloud financial consolidation, though it lacks Australian payroll and per-bin inventory costing. There is no single winner, only a best fit for your customer profile and operational complexity.
Australian wholesalers, distributors, and importers face a narrow bottleneck. Retailers demand strict electronic data interchange, warehouses need granular inventory control, and the ATO expects real-time compliance. Choosing the best ERP for wholesale distribution in Australia means matching your software to your trading partners, your warehouse depth, and your compliance burden before you consider brand recognition. This guide evaluates Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, MYOB Acumatica, Pronto Xi, Odoo, and SAP Business One against verified vendor documentation from 30 August 2026. We name the source for every claim, and we flag where a vendor documents nothing so you can ask the right questions during demo.
If you are currently using Xero or MYOB and are starting to hit limits, see our guide on outgrowing Xero and MYOB before you commit to a full ERP replacement.
Key takeaways
- Verify that GST, BAS, and TPAR are live in your demo environment before evaluating warehouse features; tax accuracy is non-negotiable.
- Budget for distribution complexity; one Australian partner quotes finance-and-distribution implementation starting above $40,000.
- Ask vendors to demonstrate inventory costing and warehouse workflows with a reference customer in your vertical before signing.
- Verify Odoo’s specific version for SuperStream and STP compliance if you are considering its distribution modules.
- Plan for a third-party integration for retail EDI requirements; do not assume native EDI is included in any mid-market ERP suite.
- Test whether your current warehouse add-on can integrate before replacing the entire finance system.
Why wholesale distribution in Australia is different
Australian distributors rarely sell only via phone and email. Major retailers demand electronic data interchange, and each trading partner sets its own accreditation rules. Myer states that suppliers must be Myer EDI accredited prior to doing business with Myer (Myer supplier page, 30 Aug 2026). Metcash publishes exact EDIFACT message types, including ORDERS, ORDRSP, DESADV, INVOIC, and CONTRL (Metcash supplier page, 30 Aug 2026).
Woolworths, Coles, and Officeworks place their EDI requirements behind supplier portals or bot protection, so you cannot assess ERP fit until you are already admitted as a supplier (vendor supplier pages, 30 Aug 2026). Because these retailers hide their requirements behind portals, you cannot self-assess message compatibility. You must rely on the ERP vendor or integration partner to confirm they have already passed accreditation. That opacity makes it critical to choose an ERP that documents proven Australian retail connectivity rather than generic e-invoicing.
Warehouse complexity is the second differentiator. Wholesale distribution often requires bin tracking, batch control, landed costing, and 3PL integration. Some vendors licence these features separately, while others document nothing at all. You should map your current warehouse workflows to the ERP feature gate before you sign.
Compliance adds a third layer. Payday Super has applied since 1 July 2026, requiring super guarantee payment each payday on qualifying earnings, reaching the fund within seven business days, and reporting through STP (ATO, 10 Aug 2026). GST registration kicks in at $75,000 turnover, and every GST-registered business must lodge a BAS (ATO, 23 May 2025 and 24 Apr 2026). Records must be kept for most transactions for five years from preparation, receipt, or completion, whichever is later, and for depreciating assets for the asset life plus five years (ATO, 18 Jun 2026 and 1 Aug 2025). eInvoicing via Peppol is not a private-business mandate; it is mandatory only for Non-corporate Commonwealth Entities (ATO, 5 Aug 2026).
EDI and Australian retail trading partners
This is the spine of the evaluation. No vendor’s EDI is native for Australian retail in the way distributors actually need. NetSuite requires a NetSuite EDI partner for Australian retail workflows. MYOB Acumatica points to a third-party ISV, B2BE. Business Central and Odoo document e-invoicing only, UBL and Peppol, not the ORDERS, DESADV, and INVOIC messages retail actually runs on.
Odoo cannot register you for Peppol in Australia. Odoo’s own list of countries eligible for Peppol registration runs to 44 European entries in both version 18 and version 19, and Australia and New Zealand are absent (Odoo docs, 30 Aug 2026). Business Central explicitly names Peppol PINT A-NZ as supported (Microsoft Learn, 2025-05-23). However, neither vendor documents the EDIFACT messages that retailers such as Metcash use.
Pronto Xi is the only vendor among the six reviewed whose own documentation names Australian trading partners. It lists Coles, Woolworths Group, David Jones, and many more, with EDIFACT conversion via VAN (Pronto, 30 Aug 2026). If your revenue depends on supply to these retailers, that documented footprint is a decisive shortlisting factor.
| Capability | Pronto Xi | NetSuite | MYOB Acumatica |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australian retail EDI named in vendor docs | Yes (Coles, Woolworths Group, David Jones, and more) | No (requires NetSuite EDI partner) | No (points to third-party ISV B2BE) |
| EDIFACT message support (ORDERS, DESADV, INVOIC) | EDIFACT conversion via VAN | Not documented for Australian retail | Not documented for Australian retail |
| Peppol e-invoicing readiness | Not documented | Not documented | Not documented |
Business Central and Odoo document Peppol e-invoicing support, but Peppol is not retail EDI. If your customers are private retailers, Peppol compliance is irrelevant unless your buyer explicitly demands it.
Warehouse and inventory management
Warehouse capability separates wholesalers from generic service businesses. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central offers deep functionality, but the vendor states that the level of complexity in a warehouse solution is largely defined by the bin setup on location cards, which in turn is licence-controlled (Microsoft documentation, 30 Aug 2026). Directed put-away and directed pick need the separate WMS granule. That means your subscription tier and your granule list determine what you can configure, not just your operational needs.
NetSuite provides bin tracking, but Oracle explicitly states that item costing is not calculated per bin. Only on-hand quantity is tracked per bin. Available, committed, backordered, and ordered quantities are also not tracked per bin (Oracle docs, 30 Aug 2026). If your distribution margin depends on bin-level costing or allocated inventory, that limitation affects your design.
Pronto Xi is deep on WMS, EDI, DRP, and forecasting, but the vendor publishes nothing on 3PL integration and nothing on expiry or shelf-life date tracking (Pronto, 30 Aug 2026). MYOB Acumatica also documents nothing on 3PL and nothing on expiry-date tracking (MYOB, 30 Aug 2026). SAP Business One could not be verified for landed cost, 3PL, EDI, or a B2B portal because SAP’s own help host blocked retrieval on 30 August 2026. Treat any SAP capability claims as unverified until you see documentation.
| Capability | Business Central | NetSuite | Pronto Xi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Directed put-away and pick | Requires separate WMS granule and Premium licence | Available within WMS module | Documented as part of WMS depth |
| Bin-level inventory costing | Not documented as a limitation | No (on-hand quantity only, not cost) | Not documented |
| 3PL integration | Not documented | Not documented | Not documented |
| Expiry or shelf-life date tracking | Not documented | Not documented | Not documented |
Australian compliance and localisation
Local tax and payroll rules change frequently, and mid-market distributors cannot afford to rebuild compliance every year. MYOB Acumatica documents native compliance for GST, BAS, and STP Phase 2, plus native payroll (MYOB Enterprise Support, 25 Sep 2024). The vendor also documents Australian hosting company-wide (myob.com, 30 Aug 2026). That makes it a strong candidate if your finance team wants one system for general ledger and payroll without third-party connectors.
Business Central documents GST and BAS functionality, including withholding tax, BAS business units, ABN, and EFT (Microsoft Learn, 2025-05-23). However, the vendor documents nothing on Australian payroll. NetSuite documents GST and BAS via its Tax Reporting Framework and SuiteTax APAC SuiteApp, but ATO lodgement is not documented, and SuitePeople Payroll supports only U.S. federal, state, and local payroll taxes (Oracle docs, 30 Aug 2026). NetSuite does host in Melbourne and Sydney.
Odoo documents Australian GST, BAS, and TPAR through its l10n_au modules (Odoo docs, 30 Aug 2026). Australian hosting is also documented. Payroll is version-dependent; version 19 claims SuperStream and STP Phase 2 compliance, but version 18 states it is still in the process of becoming compliant.
Pronto Xi is on the ATO DSP register and states data is stored in Australia, but the vendor documents nothing on GST or BAS functionality (Pronto, 30 Aug 2026). SAP Business One documents GST and BAS via an Australia and New Zealand demo database and a Tax Reports help topic, but the vendor documents nothing on payroll or data centre location (SAP, Aug 2026).
Remember that no ATO rule mandates Australian data residency. TR 2018/2 requires records to remain accessible in English and available to the ATO, but it does not require local servers (ATO, 18 Jun 2026; TR 2018/2, 14 Feb 2018). Hosting in Australia is a risk preference, not a legal mandate.
| Compliance area | MYOB Acumatica | Business Central | Odoo |
|---|---|---|---|
| GST and BAS | Documented, native compliance | Documented, including withholding tax and ABN | Documented via l10n_au modules |
| STP Phase 2 and Payday Super | Documented, native STP Phase 2 | Not documented | Version-dependent (v19 claims compliance, v18 says in process) |
| Australian payroll | Documented | Vendor documents nothing | Version-dependent |
| Australian data hosting | Documented company-wide | Documented (Azure Australia) | Documented |
Pricing and implementation expectations
Published pricing is scarce for mid-market distribution ERP, and partner quotes vary widely. Microsoft lists Business Central Essentials at AU$119.70 per user per month yearly, excluding GST, and Premium at AU$164.60 per user per month on the same terms (Microsoft AU pricing page, 30 Aug 2026). Team Members are AU$12.00 per user per month. If you need directed put-away and pick, you will also need the separate WMS granule, which adds cost on top of the Premium licence.
Odoo publishes Standard at US$24.90 per user per month on an annual promotional rate, and Custom at US$49.00 per user per month on the same terms (Odoo pricing page, 30 Aug 2026). The vendor’s Australian pricing page returned HTTP 403 on 30 August 2026, so we quote in USD. Oracle NetSuite does not publish a price list; partner Annexa publishes that there is no price list (annexa.com.au, 7 Aug 2026). One Australian NetSuite partner, Jcurve Solutions, publishes its own NetSuite-based SMB edition at $99 per user per month annually for the GO tier, $149 for GROW, and $249 for PRO, with implementation packages under $10,000 (Jcurve Solutions, 30 Aug 2026). Another partner, Klugo, publishes NetSuite implementation analysis at $150 to $250 per hour (Klugo, 30 Aug 2026).
For MYOB Acumatica, one Australian partner, Kilimanjaro Consulting, publishes subscription estimates between $2,000 and $5,000 per month and implementations between $50,000 and $150,000 (Kilimanjaro Consulting, 10 Jun 2026). Another partner, Leverage Technologies, publishes core user pricing from $200 to $271 per user per month, and implementation bands starting at $30,000 for finance, $40,000 for finance and distribution, and $55,000 for finance, distribution, and manufacturing (Leverage Technologies, 29 Jul 2026). These are partner-specific figures, not market rates.
Every pricing estimate in this section is based on list pricing and implementation partner labour, and actual pricing depends on scope.
Expert insight: Distributors often over-invest in financial consolidation and under-invest in EDI accreditation. If more than 30% of your revenue moves through Coles, Woolworths, Metcash, or David Jones, your implementation budget should allocate at least 20% to trading partner onboarding, VAN setup, and message testing before go-live. The ERP itself is only half the equation; the supply chain integration is the other half. Choose your partner for both capabilities, not just the core ledger.
Which ERP fits which distributor?
There is no overall winner, but there are clear conditional fits based on the facts above.
If you supply major Australian retailers, Pronto Xi is the only vendor in this review that documents direct trading relationships with Coles, Woolworths Group, and David Jones, plus EDIFACT conversion via VAN. It also offers deep WMS, DRP, and forecasting. The gaps are 3PL and expiry-date tracking, which the vendor documents nothing about, so you must verify those in your own demo.
If you are a multi-entity importer that needs cloud financial consolidation across Australian and overseas subsidiaries, NetSuite is a credible option. It hosts in Melbourne and Sydney, and the Australian partner ecosystem includes Jcurve Solutions, Klugo, and Annexa. NetSuite also offers the SuiteSuccess methodology for faster implementation. The limitations are significant: no Australian payroll, no per-bin inventory costing, and EDI requires a dedicated NetSuite EDI partner. For a direct comparison with MYOB, see our NetSuite vs MYOB Acumatica analysis.
If you want strong Australian compliance in a single platform, MYOB Acumatica offers native GST, BAS, STP Phase 2, and payroll. One partner publishes subscription bands between $2,000 and $5,000 per month and implementation ranges between $50,000 and $150,000. You will still need a third-party ISV such as B2BE for retail EDI, and the vendor documents nothing on 3PL or expiry tracking.
If you already run Microsoft 365, Azure, or Dynamics applications, Business Central provides familiar architecture and Peppol PINT A-NZ support. Premium licensing and the WMS granule can handle complex warehousing, but the vendor documents nothing on Australian payroll. Budget for the granule on top of the per-user subscription.
If you are a low-volume importer with simple warehousing and a tight budget, Odoo’s modular pricing is attractive. However, it cannot register you for Peppol in Australia, its EDI coverage does not extend to retail EDIFACT messages, and its Australian payroll claims are contradictory across versions. It is a conditional fit only if your compliance needs are light and your customers do not demand EDI.
If you are evaluating SAP Business One, demand documented proof of landed cost, 3PL, EDI, and B2B portal capabilities. SAP’s help host blocked retrieval on 30 August 2026, so we cannot verify those features. For a broader view of the market, read our best ERP software for Australia comparison. Importers with multiple entities should also review our multi-entity ERP Australia guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need EDI to supply Coles and Woolworths?
Yes. Coles, Woolworths, and Metcash operate on EDIFACT message standards, and Myer requires EDI accreditation before you can trade (Myer supplier page, 30 Aug 2026; Metcash supplier page, 30 Aug 2026).
Is Peppol e-invoicing mandatory for my wholesale business?
No. Peppol e-invoicing is mandatory only for Non-corporate Commonwealth Entities. Private businesses are not obliged by the ATO to use Peppol (ATO, 5 Aug 2026).
Can I use Business Central Premium for advanced warehousing?
Premium licensing includes manufacturing and service management, but directed put-away and pick still require a separate WMS granule. The bin setup complexity is licence-controlled (Microsoft documentation, 30 Aug 2026).
Does NetSuite track inventory costs per warehouse bin?
No. Oracle explicitly states that item costing is not calculated per bin. Only on-hand quantity is tracked per bin (Oracle docs, 30 Aug 2026).
How much should an Australian distributor budget for ERP implementation?
One Australian partner, Kilimanjaro Consulting, publishes MYOB Acumatica implementations between $50,000 and $150,000 (Kilimanjaro Consulting, 10 Jun 2026). Another partner, Leverage Technologies, publishes finance and distribution implementations from $40,000 to $80,000 plus (Leverage Technologies, 29 Jul 2026). These are partner-specific figures, not market rates. Every estimate depends on scope.
Do I need Australian data centres for ATO compliance?
No. The ATO requires that records remain accessible in English for at least five years, but TR 2018/2 does not mandate Australian servers (ATO, 18 Jun 2026; TR 2018/2, 14 Feb 2018).
Why is SAP Business One not featured more prominently?
We cannot verify its capabilities for landed cost, 3PL, EDI, or B2B portals because SAP’s help host blocked retrieval on 30 August 2026. We recommend you request documented proof from the vendor or partner before shortlisting.
Does Odoo support Australian payroll and super compliance?
Odoo’s documentation is contradictory. Version 19.0 claims compliance with SuperStream and STP Phase 2, but version 18.0 states it is in the process of becoming compliant (Odoo, 30 Aug 2026). Verify your specific version before committing.
