Pick, Pack and Ship Software for Growing Distributors and Brands

Pick, Pack and Ship Software for Growing Distributors and Brands

Last updated: October 8, 2026 · Independent buyer’s guide · We do not sell rankings or coverage.

Pick pack ship software tells pickers what to pull and from where, checks at the pack bench that the right items went into the box, and prints the packing slip and carrier label. For a growing US distributor or ecommerce brand, the choice sits between a shipping platform with scan verification added (ShipStation, Ordoro, ShipWorks), an inventory system with picking and shipping built in (Zoho Inventory, Cin7, Finale, SKUSavvy) and a full warehouse management system (ShipHero, NetSuite WMS). The right category depends on your order volume, how many SKUs and bins you manage, and whether you sell B2B to retailers with labeling rules.

Key takeaways

  • Barcode pack verification catches wrong-item shipments, but some tools reserve it for higher tiers. ShipStation lists “scan to verify” on Standard and Premium, not Starter.
  • Batch, zone and wave picking matter once pickers handle many orders per trip. WMS products such as NetSuite WMS and ShipHero direct the picker bin by bin.
  • Published prices range from free label tools (Veeqo Shipping, Ordoro Essential, Shippo Starter) to $1,995 per month for ShipHero’s Standard WMS for Brands, checked October 8, 2026.
  • If you ship to big-box retailers, confirm the software can print GS1-128 labels with an SSCC and link them to your EDI 856 advance ship notice. Test this during a trial.
  • USPS moved its dimensional weight divisor from 166 to 139 in July 2026, so carton selection and accurate dimensions now affect postage on more parcels.

How the pick, pack and ship process works

An order is released to the warehouse, a picker collects the items, a packer confirms and boxes them, and a shipper prints a label and sends tracking back to the sales channel or ERP. The software question is how much of that sequence the system controls.

Picking methods

Your picking method determines what the software must support:

  • Single-order picking. One picker collects one order at a time. In NetSuite WMS, an order not yet released in a wave can be picked on its own, and the system generates the wave and pick tasks automatically (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).
  • Batch or multi-order picking. One picker collects items for several orders in one trip. In NetSuite WMS, pickers “pick similar items for multiple orders released in the same wave” and use a pick carton only for items that belong to the same order (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).
  • Pick to tote. A batch variant where each order goes into its own tote on the cart, so the packer receives orders already sorted. ShipHero’s Multi-Item Batch picking assigns each order a tote and requires the picker to scan the item, then the tote, then the tote again to confirm placement (ShipHero Help, September 15, 2026).
  • Zone picking. Each picker works one area of the warehouse and orders are consolidated afterwards. In NetSuite WMS, zone picking requires locations with bins and orders released in waves (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).
  • Wave picking. Orders are released in groups on a schedule, often timed to carrier pickups.

Packing, documents and shipping

The packer confirms the contents, chooses a carton, weighs it and prints a packing slip and a shipping label. B2B shipments to retailers may also need a GS1-128 carton label carrying a Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC). The GS1 Logistic Label Guideline states that the SSCC is the only mandatory element on a GS1 logistic label and lists 4 x 6 inch as a compact label size (GS1, Release 1.3, July 2019). The SSCC ties the carton to the retailer’s advance ship notice, covered in our guide to EDI 940 and 945 warehouse shipping orders.

Where pick, pack and ship goes wrong

Most errors trace back to a few failure points, and the one that hurts you most tells you which capability to prioritize.

  • Wrong item or quantity. Look-alike SKUs, size and color variants and multi-unit lines are the usual culprits. Our analysis of what mis-picks really cost distributors covers the downstream cost in more detail.
  • Kits and bundles. A bundle picked as several components is easy to short. ShipWorks requires each component of a bundled SKU to be scanned separately during verification (ShipWorks Support, November 8, 2021). If kits are a large share of your volume, see our guide to kitting inventory.
  • Wasted walking. Single-order picking across a large warehouse adds travel time unless the software can group orders and route pickers.
  • Wrong carton or wrong service. An oversized box can raise the billable weight. UPS calculates dimensional weight as length times width times height divided by 139 for Daily Rates and 166 for Retail Rates (UPS, no date shown). USPS announced it would “align the divisor for dimensional weight pieces to industry standards” from July 12, 2026 (USPS, May 11, 2026). The Domestic Mail Manual in force before that date divided by 166 (USPS DMM 223, April 6, 2026 edition), and the revision effective July 12, 2026 divides by 139 for parcels over 1 cubic foot (USPS Postal Bulletin 22705, June 25, 2026).
  • Tracking that never syncs back. If the label is printed outside the system that holds the order, tracking numbers, inventory deductions and invoices can drift apart.

How software handles pick, pack and ship

Three overlapping product types cover this process.

Shipping platforms with picking and verification added

ShipStation, Ordoro, ShipWorks, Shippo and Veeqo started as label and rate tools. They import orders, print pick lists and packing slips, compare carrier rates and push tracking back. They are fast to set up, but they rely on your store or ERP for the inventory record and do little bin management.

In Ordoro, the packer scans the packing list barcode to load the order, scans each item, gets a warning on any wrong or extra item, and the order is then tagged “Contents Verified” (Ordoro Support, February 27, 2026).

Inventory management systems with fulfillment built in

Zoho Inventory, Cin7, Finale Inventory and SKUSavvy hold the inventory record and add picking and shipping on top. Zoho Inventory picklists can be grouped by item, by sales order or not at all, assigned to pickers, and scanned item by item; multi-warehouse must be enabled (Zoho Inventory Help, no date shown). Cin7’s Standard WMS is a mobile picking and packing app for one warehouse, with Advanced WMS adding multi-warehouse support, kitting picks and FIFO/FEFO pick enforcement (Cin7 pricing, no date shown). Finale includes wave, batch and pick-and-pack methods in its Barcode WMS module on the Growth and Enterprise plans (Finale Inventory pricing, no date shown). They suit distributors that want purchasing, stock and fulfillment in one record.

Warehouse management systems

ShipHero, NetSuite WMS and add-ons such as RF-SMART for NetSuite direct work at the bin level: they generate pick tasks, enforce scans of bins and items, and group orders into waves or batches. They suit many SKUs and several pickers per shift, at higher cost and setup effort. RF-SMART does not publish pricing on its pick, pack and ship page (RF-SMART, no date shown), and Oracle does not publish NetSuite WMS pricing on its WMS product page (NetSuite, no date shown).

Native versus add-on

If you run an ERP, check what its warehouse module does before adding a tool. If it has no scanning, a shipping platform that writes tracking back to the ERP is usually the simplest addition. Our overview of the key features of distribution software explains how ERP, inventory and WMS layers fit together.

Shippo publishes pricing too (Starter free up to 30 shipments, Pro from $17), but its pricing page does not describe pack verification, so we treat it as a label tool (Shippo pricing, no date shown).

What pick pack ship software costs

Shipping platforms such as ShipStation charge by monthly shipment tier. Inventory systems such as Zoho Inventory and Cin7 charge by plan with order and user caps. SKUSavvy charges a base fee plus a graduated per-order rate; its own example puts 1,000 orders per month at $324.19 (SKUSavvy pricing, no date shown).

Off the pricing page, budget for barcode scanners or mobile computers, 4 x 6 thermal label printers, a shipping scale and staff time to barcode bins and SKUs. ShipStation notes an annual billing option with a stated 20% saving, and SKUSavvy lists optional onboarding at $2,750 plus $250 per month for support. Carrier postage, insurance and address validation fees are separate in every product we reviewed.

An illustrative worked example

The figures in this example are an illustration, not vendor quotes or industry benchmarks.

Assume a brand ships 1,000 orders a month from one warehouse and wants pack verification. On list prices checked October 8, 2026, monthly software cost would be:

  • Ordoro Advanced: $59, with barcode verification included and up to 3,000 labels.
  • ShipStation Standard at the 1,000-shipment tier: $149.99, with scan to verify and mobile picking.
  • SKUSavvy: $324.19, with bin-level warehouse mapping and pick routing.
  • ShipHero Standard WMS for Brands: $1,995.

Now assume the brand mis-ships 1.5% of orders today and each error costs $30 in reshipment, return postage and staff time. That is 15 errors and $450 per month. If scan verification cut errors to 0.3%, the saving of about $360 per month would cover any of the first three options. ShipHero would need to be justified by picker productivity and SKU count instead.

Carton choice matters too. A 16 x 12 x 10 inch box has a volume of 1,920 cubic inches. Divided by 139, the dimensional weight is 13.8, rounded up to 14 pounds; divided by the old USPS divisor of 166, it was 11.6, rounded up to 12 pounds. If the contents weigh 5 pounds, you pay for 14.

Our independent take

Most growing brands and distributors should start by fixing verification, not picking. A scan at the pack bench catches errors regardless of how the item was picked, and it is available on low-cost shipping platforms. Ordoro includes pack verification even on its free Essential shipping plan, while ShipStation places it on Standard and above. Move to a WMS such as ShipHero or NetSuite WMS when walking time, many pickers or many bin locations become the constraint. If you sell to retailers, test GS1-128 and SSCC label output during the trial, because none of the pricing pages we checked mention it. We do not name an overall winner, because the right tool depends on your volume, ERP and channel mix.

Three buyer scenarios

A Shopify brand shipping 300 to 1,500 orders a month. You likely need pack verification, rate shopping and branded packing slips more than bin-level picking. A shipping platform such as Ordoro or ShipStation Standard covers this.

A distributor with 3,000 SKUs selling B2B and through a webstore. You need inventory, purchasing and batch picking in one record. An inventory system such as Cin7, Finale or Zoho Inventory fits better than a label tool. Confirm whether batch or wave picking is in your tier, and whether your retail customers require SSCC labels and EDI 856 notices.

A multi-location operation with several pickers per shift. Travel time, zone assignment and staging become the bottleneck. A WMS such as ShipHero, or NetSuite WMS if you already run NetSuite, gives you waves, zones and enforced bin scans.

When you do not need dedicated pick pack ship software

You may not need a separate tool if you ship a few hundred orders a month or fewer, carry a small number of distinct SKUs and have one or two packers. In that case, the packing slips and labels in your store platform or a free label tool such as Veeqo Shipping, Ordoro Essential or Shippo Starter may be enough. Add dedicated software when error rates, labor hours or chargebacks show a measurable problem.

How we researched this

We reviewed the top-ranking pages for “pick pack ship software,” which are mostly vendor pages or vendor-written lists with little pricing detail. We checked each vendor’s pricing page and help documentation on October 8, 2026, and used UPS, USPS and GS1 for shipping rules. The comparison table includes only tools with published pricing. No vendor paid for inclusion or reviewed this guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is pick pack ship software?

It is software that guides warehouse staff through picking items for an order, packing and verifying them, and printing the packing slip and shipping label. Most products import orders from your sales channels and send tracking back, and some also manage inventory and bins.

What is the difference between batch picking and wave picking?

Batch picking means one picker collects items for several orders in a single trip. Wave picking means orders are released to the warehouse in scheduled groups, often timed to carrier cutoffs.

Does ShipStation verify items with a barcode scanner?

Yes, but not on every plan. ShipStation’s pricing page, checked October 8, 2026, lists scan to verify on Standard and Premium, while Starter includes pick lists without scan verification. Pick to tote is listed on Premium only.

Do I need a WMS or is shipping software enough?

Shipping software with pack verification is usually enough for one warehouse with modest SKU counts and a few packers. A WMS becomes worthwhile when you need bin-level pick tasks, waves, zones and multiple pickers working at once. ShipHero’s brand WMS lists at $1,995 per month, against $59 to $150 for shipping platforms at about 1,000 orders.

What label do retailers require on B2B cartons?

Many retailers require a GS1-128 logistic label carrying a Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC), which matches the carton to the advance ship notice. GS1’s guideline says the SSCC is the only mandatory element on the label and lists 4 x 6 inch as a compact size. Check your retailer’s routing guide for the exact fields.
