NetSuite Period Close Checklist: Period Close Tasks, Locks and Reopening

NetSuite Period Close Checklist: Period Close Tasks, Locks and Reopening

Last updated: November 3, 2026 · Independent guide · We do not sell rankings or coverage.

The NetSuite period close checklist is the task list NetSuite shows for each period on the Manage Accounting Periods page. It runs from Lock A/R, Lock A/P, Lock Payroll and Lock All through inventory review, intercompany adjustments, currency revaluation, consolidation and period end journals to the final Close task, and NetSuite enforces most of that order. The template below gives every native task an owner, a reviewer, a due business day and the evidence to keep.

How to use this template

Each row is one task. “BD” means business day after month end. “Native” rows use the task names on NetSuite’s checklist; “pre-close” rows are work NetSuite does not track but that must finish before the next native task. Delete rows for features you do not use. The due days are an illustration for a single-book company targeting a seven-day close.

Open the checklist at Setup > Accounting > Manage GL > Manage Accounting Periods and click the Checklist icon for the period. To complete every task, the user needs Edit or Full access to Manage Accounting Periods plus Override Period Restrictions, and some tasks need extra permissions (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

How to fill in each part of the template

The four locks

Locking blocks GL-impacting changes to posting transactions in the period, across the UI, CSV import, web services, SuiteScript and ODBC (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). Lock A/R, Lock A/P and Lock Payroll have no prerequisites, so you can stagger them. Lock All gates the inventory tasks, intercompany adjustments and GL audit numbering (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

A lock does not stop everyone. Users with Override Period Restrictions can still post, and administrators hold it by default (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). To let AP post one late bill, release only Lock A/P and relock afterwards. Unlocking a transaction module also unlocks All GL Transactions (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown; Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). Once a period is closed, you must reopen it instead (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

Inventory tasks and inventory cost revaluation

The inventory tasks run in a fixed chain: Resolve Date/Period Mismatches, Review Negative Inventory, Review Inventory Cost Accounting, then Review Inventory Activity. With Advanced Bin/Numbered Inventory Management, Review Item Line/Inventory Detail Quantity Mismatch sits between the first two. NetSuite lets you mark the first two complete with problems still listed, so the reviewer should confirm the lists were empty. Review Negative Inventory does not create a count, and Review Inventory Cost Accounting cannot run while costing calculations are running or deferred (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). Our NetSuite inventory adjustment guide covers the adjustments that clear negative counts.

Inventory cost revaluation is not a checklist task, which is why it has its own row. With standard costing, the transaction at Transactions > Inventory > Revalue Inventory Cost sets the standard cost from an effective date and sets the value of on-hand inventory (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown; Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). Oracle warns that backdating starts a long recalculation across affected transactions and assemblies, and advises planning around month-end close (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). Post it before Review Inventory Cost Accounting.

Intercompany, currency revaluation and consolidation

Create Intercompany Adjustments needs the Journal Entry permission. Revalue Open Foreign Currency Balances needs Currency Revaluation at Create level and runs per subsidiary (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). It uses the rate on the last day of the period and posts unrealized gains and losses on open customer and vendor transactions, foreign currency accounts and other non-equity balance sheet accounts (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

Have a reviewer check rates before marking Calculate Consolidated Exchange Rates complete, because Oracle says the rates for that period cannot be changed afterwards (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

Revenue, numbering and Close

Recognize Revenue and Reclassify Revenue appear with Advanced Revenue Management. For these, intercompany adjustments and revaluation, NetSuite makes you open the task page before marking it complete, but does not force you to run it (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). GL Audit Numbering appears in the last month of the numbering period. After Close, nobody can post to the general ledger for any date in the period (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

Bank reconciliation is not a native task either; the template puts it before Lock All so cash is final before revaluation. See our NetSuite bank reconciliation guide. For accruals, review and the reporting package around these rows, use our generic month-end close checklist.

Reopening a period

A user with Manage Accounting Periods opens the Close task, clicks Reopen Period and enters a justification, which NetSuite saves as a user note. Later closed periods reopen automatically, and you may need to redo their tasks (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). Revaluation must be rerun in every reopened period before you close again (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). If the edit has no GL effect, such as a memo, a period with Allow Non-G/L Changes checked lets users with that permission make it without reopening (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

Common mistakes

  • Starting before the prior period is closed. You can lock, but no other task can be completed until earlier periods are closed.
  • Treating a lock as a hard stop. Review who holds Override Period Restrictions each quarter.
  • Marking tasks complete without doing them. Require the evidence before sign-off.
  • Revaluing only the parent. Revaluation runs per subsidiary in OneWorld.
  • Backdating standard cost changes late in the close. The recalculation can hold up Review Inventory Cost Accounting.
  • Using Quick Close as a shortcut. Oracle says it marks tasks complete without running them (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).

When to move from a spreadsheet to software

The native checklist already enforces order and logs completions, so many single-entity companies run this template in a spreadsheet beside it and find exceptions with saved searches (see our NetSuite saved search guide). Consider close software once you have several subsidiaries or many preparers.

FloQast, a close software vendor, integrates with NetSuite for reconciliations and flux analysis and flags balance changes after sign-off; pricing is by quote (FloQast, no date shown). BlackLine’s NetSuite connector imports balances, currency rates and saved searches and shows NetSuite GL and bank statement transactions side by side; its datasheet publishes no pricing (BlackLine, no date shown). Oracle’s Close Management and Consolidation Sync SuiteApp links NetSuite to Oracle Financial Consolidation and Close (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). All three sit beside the native checklist; the locks and Close still happen in NetSuite.

How we researched this

We built the template from Oracle’s NetSuite Help pages on the checklist, task dependencies, locking, reopening, inventory tasks and revaluation, checked on November 3, 2026; the pages show no revision date. We also reviewed top-ranking guides from Salto, FloQast, Eide Bailly and SixLakes Consulting. Due days and the reopen example are our illustration.

Frequently asked questions

What order are the NetSuite period close tasks in?

The locks come first, then inventory tasks, custom GL plug-in review, intercompany adjustments, currency revaluation, revenue tasks, consolidated exchange rates, eliminations, period end journals, GL audit numbering and Close.

Can anyone still post to a locked period in NetSuite?

Yes. Users with Override Period Restrictions, including administrators by default, can still post. Nobody can post to a closed period until it is reopened.

How do I reopen a closed period in NetSuite?

Open the checklist, click the Close task, choose Reopen Period and enter a justification. You need Manage Accounting Periods. Later closed periods reopen too, so plan to redo tasks such as revaluation.

Do I have to close NetSuite periods in order?

Yes. You can lock a period while earlier ones are open, but you cannot complete other tasks or close it until all previous periods are closed. With Multi-Book Accounting, you close and reopen periods for each accounting book separately.

What does Quick Close do in NetSuite?

It closes one or more periods by marking every task complete without running the tasks. Oracle recommends it only when no closing tasks are needed, such as re-closing reopened periods, and it handles up to 60 periods per run.
