Routings in Manufacturing ERP: Operations, Work Centers and Costing

Last updated: October 9, 2026 · Independent guide · We do not sell rankings or coverage.
A routing in manufacturing is the ordered list of operations needed to make an item, with the work center that performs each operation and the standard setup and run time it should take. In an ERP system, the routing is the master data that drives both production scheduling and the labor and overhead cost of every unit you build.
What a routing is, precisely
A routing is attached to a manufactured item (or to its bill of materials) and contains one line per operation. Each line carries an operation number that sets the sequence, the work center that does the work, a setup time, a run time, and any wait or move time.
Setup time is fixed per production order or batch, such as changing tooling or calibrating a machine. Run time is per unit and scales with quantity. Microsoft’s Business Central documentation states it plainly: “Setup time is calculated per production order, whereas run time is calculated per produced item” (Microsoft Learn, June 3, 2026). Wait and move time extend lead time but, in Business Central, do not consume work center capacity.
A work center is the group of people or machines that performs an operation, with its own calendar, capacity and cost rate.
An illustrative example: a machined steel bracket
These figures are an illustration, not benchmarks. A bracket is made in lots of 200, and each work center rate combines labor and overhead.
| Operation and work center | Setup time | Run time per unit | Rate per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Saw cut (Saw cell) | 0.5 hours | 0.02 hours | $60 |
| 20 Mill (CNC cell) | 1.5 hours | 0.10 hours | $95 |
| 30 Deburr and inspect (Finishing) | 0.25 hours | 0.03 hours | $45 |
For a lot of 200, the CNC cell is loaded for 1.5 + (200 × 0.10) = 21.5 hours, which is the load the scheduler places on that cell’s calendar. Total routing cost is $270.00 at the saw, $2,042.50 at the CNC cell and $281.25 in finishing, or $2,593.75 for the lot and about $12.97 per unit.
Setup accounts for $183.75 of that total. If the same part runs in lots of 50, setup per unit rises from about $0.92 to about $3.68, and the unit cost rises to about $15.73. The costing lot size in your ERP matters as much as the times.
How routings are used in practice and in ERP software
Scheduling. A released production order copies the routing and schedules each operation against the work center calendar. Business Central schedules operations in the sequence setup, run, wait, move (Microsoft Learn, June 3, 2026), and calculates duration as run time divided by efficiency and capacity (Microsoft Learn, July 15, 2026). NetSuite uses the routing’s Setup Time, Run Rate and the default calendar to schedule each step (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown).
Labor and overhead costing. A standard cost rollup multiplies routing times by work center rates. Business Central defines work center unit cost as direct unit cost plus an indirect cost percentage plus a fixed overhead rate. NetSuite’s rollup divides setup cost by the Standard Cost Lot Size and charges run cost per unit, and posts actual routing costs to work in process as time or quantity is logged (Oracle NetSuite Help, no date shown). Odoo handles routing as the Operations tab on the bill of materials, where each operation names a work center carrying a cost per hour, time efficiency, setup and cleanup time, and optional alternative work centers (Odoo 18.0 documentation, no date shown).
Variance and accuracy. Once operators report actual time against each operation, the gap between routing standards and actual hours becomes a labor efficiency variance. Outdated routing times distort both quoted margins and the capacity plan, so review your highest-volume items against actual data at least once a year. Our guide to standard cost vs actual cost explains how those variances post.

How we researched this
We reviewed the top-ranking pages for this term, then read routing and work center documentation from Microsoft, Oracle NetSuite and Odoo on October 9, 2026. All three vendors sell the software they document. The bracket example is our own illustration.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a routing and a bill of materials?
The bill of materials lists the components in a product. The routing lists the operations, work centers and times needed to make it. Most ERP systems need both to schedule an order or roll up a standard cost.
What is the difference between setup time and run time?
Setup time is fixed per order or batch, such as changing tools. Run time is per unit and is multiplied by the order quantity, so larger lots spread setup over more units.
Can one item have more than one routing?
Yes, in most mid-market ERP systems. Business Central supports routing versions, and Odoo lets a work center name alternative work centers to use when the primary one is unavailable.
Do small manufacturers need routings?
If you only track material cost, a bill of materials may be enough. To schedule against machine capacity, quote labor accurately or measure labor variances, you need routings with realistic times.
