Is NetSuite an ERP? What NetSuite Includes, What It Doesn't, and How It Compares

Last updated: November 3, 2026 · Independent guide · We do not sell rankings or coverage.
Yes, NetSuite is an ERP. Oracle describes NetSuite as a cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, and its core platform includes accounting, inventory management, order management and tax management in one database (Oracle NetSuite, April 13, 2026). Oracle also sells CRM, ecommerce, HR and professional services modules on the same platform, which is why some people describe NetSuite as a CRM or an ecommerce system. Those parts sit on top of the ERP, and most of them are paid add-ons.
What makes NetSuite an ERP
An ERP system records financial and operational transactions in one shared database, so a sales order, the inventory it reserves and the revenue it books all update the same ledger. NetSuite meets that definition. Its ERP product page lists accounting, financial management, multi-subsidiary management (OneWorld), inventory, order management, supply chain, warehouse management and procurement (Oracle NetSuite, no date shown).
Oracle bought NetSuite in November 2016 and ships two updates a year to every customer on the shared cloud platform (Oracle NetSuite, April 13, 2026).
Base license vs paid add-ons
Oracle says the annual license has three parts: the core platform, optional modules and the number of users, plus a one-time implementation fee. Oracle does not publish a price list. The table below sorts the main areas by how Oracle describes them.
| Area | Base or add-on | What Oracle says |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting, inventory, order management, tax | Base | “Included with the core NetSuite platform” |
| CRM (sales, marketing, service) | Base platform, extra user licenses | Included with the platform, but additional CRM licenses are needed |
| Ecommerce (SuiteCommerce) | Add-on | “Available as an add-on” to the annual license |
| HR, PSA | Add-on | Listed as options customers can add to the core platform |
Your service tier also caps capacity. The Standard tier allows up to 100 users and 200,000 transaction lines a month, and the Ultimate tier allows up to 4,000 users and 50 million lines (Oracle NetSuite Help Center, no date shown).
Example: what a distributor actually buys
Illustration only. A US wholesale distributor with 25 staff wants to replace QuickBooks. Accounting, inventory and sales orders fall inside the core platform. If it adds a B2B web store, it pays for SuiteCommerce. If it opens a Canadian subsidiary, it needs NetSuite OneWorld, the multi-subsidiary product, which it should price separately. If it wants NetSuite payroll, SuitePeople U.S. Payroll covers only US federal, state and local taxes, so the Canadian staff need another payroll product (Oracle NetSuite Help Center, no date shown).
How NetSuite compares in practice
Where NetSuite is CRM or ecommerce rather than ERP
NetSuite CRM covers sales force automation, marketing automation, customer service management and partner relationship management (Oracle NetSuite, no date shown). SuiteCommerce runs B2B and B2C web stores that post orders straight into NetSuite (Oracle NetSuite, no date shown). Both share the ERP’s customer, order and inventory data, but many companies still run Salesforce or HubSpot for sales and Shopify for their store, and connect them to NetSuite through an integration.
NetSuite vs QuickBooks
QuickBooks Online is accounting software. Its top plan, Advanced, lists at $340 a month and includes up to 25 users (Intuit, checked November 3, 2026). Intuit points multi-entity companies to a separate product, Intuit Enterprise Suite. NetSuite costs more and needs a paid implementation, but adds inventory, order management and multi-subsidiary consolidation in one system. Our QuickBooks to NetSuite migration guide covers the move.
NetSuite vs Tier 1 ERPs
Oracle’s own article defines Tier I ERP as systems built for global enterprises with roughly $500 million or more in revenue, and notes that tiers are not standardized (Oracle NetSuite, October 4, 2024). SAP, which sells a competing cloud ERP, notes that NetSuite positions itself for small and midsize businesses, describes its own cloud ERP as built for enterprises that need control at scale, and lists a single-tenant private edition while describing NetSuite only as multitenant (SAP, no date shown). Some large groups run NetSuite in subsidiaries under a Tier 1 headquarters system, an approach known as two-tier ERP.
How we researched this
We read Oracle’s product pages, pricing description and Help Center, Intuit’s pricing page and SAP’s comparison page on November 3, 2026. The top-ranking pages for this question come mostly from NetSuite partners and software sellers, and few separate base modules from add-ons.

Frequently asked questions
Is NetSuite an ERP or a CRM?
NetSuite is an ERP first. Its CRM functions run on the same platform and database, and Oracle says CRM comes with the platform but needs additional CRM user licenses. Companies can use NetSuite CRM or connect a separate CRM.
Is NetSuite a Tier 1 ERP?
Not by Oracle’s own definition, which reserves Tier I for enterprises with roughly $500 million or more in revenue. NetSuite positions itself for small and midsize businesses, although its Ultimate service tier supports up to 4,000 users.
Does NetSuite publish its prices?
No. Oracle describes the pricing structure but quotes each customer privately. Partner and consultant estimates exist, but you should treat them as estimates and ask for a written quote.
