Manufacturing Software
Production processes today are increasingly multi-faceted and complex, leaving the majority of manufacturers with the challenge of finding methods to streamline and simplify their activities. What’s more, as competition continually increases across all industries, manufacturers have to find ways to decrease production costs and pass the savings on to the customer through lower prices. Manufacturing software solutions empower companies to do just that, by delivering advanced technologies manufacturers need in order to minimize overhead and maximize efficiency.
Manufacturing software is a collection of technology tools that are designed to improve the end-to-end process of building and designing a product. From planning and engineering through quality control and production, manufacturing software offers the necessary tools businesses need in order to create the best product efficiently and cost-effectivly.
Manufacturing software suites usually serve these five primary functions: streamlining product configuration and design, tracking and managing product components, automating production scheduling, accelerating the manufacturing process, and improving product quality.
While wholesalers, service organizations, and distributors generally have little need for Manufacturing software, any business that has processes in designing, building, and producing a product – whether it’s auto parts, large machinery, small household appliances, software, or clothing – can achieve real productivity increases as well as cost reduction benefits by implementing Manufacturing software. However, manufacturers who currently utilize manual processes in managing key production activities like demand forecasting, materials management, and scheduling benefit the most from Manufacturing software. Moreover, businesses that generally have a difficult time balancing and predicting demand, or frequently experience delays in production, large inventory surpluses, or materials shortages, should also seriously consider investing in Manufacturing software.
One of the main benefits of Manufacturing software is that it assists many proven and tested best practices in manufacturing and production.
For instance, Manufacturing software makes it easier to foresee demand and increase bill of materials accuracy. Moreover, Manufacturing software assists companies in better determining what components they need and when they’ll need them. Accordingly, it allows for efficient implementation of a manufacturing model that dramatically improves cash flow and decreases inventory storage costs.
Other benefits companies get from manufacturing software include optimized resource utilization, increased throughput, decreased “downtime” and delays in production, and reduced cost over-runs, product variations, and defects.
There are any number of different types of Manufacturing solutions on the market, and most provide a wide range of features that address production-related processes such as:
- Engineering to simplify product configuration and design and deliver effective change control.
- Material requirements planning to stabilize supply with upcoming demand, manage component requirements modifications, and recognize and prevent possible material shortages or overages.
- Capacity planning to recognize growth trends and study how current and probable demands will influence production centers.
- Production management to generate automated manufacturing workflows and processes as well as streamline the people and equipment scheduling based on existing and forecasted work orders.
- Quality control to facilitate implementing proven, repeatable quality assurance practices, ensuring company compliance with standards like ISO and providing thorough quality documentation.
- Cost management to determine how design, procurement, sourcing, and production choices affect costs, and to effectively manage expenses through the whole product lifecycle.

Congratulations on the selection of your new ERP software solution! According to Panorama Consulting Services’ 2012 ERP Report, 54 percent of implementations take longer than anticipated and 56 percent cost more than budgeted.
