What is a good solution for contact management that includes workflow automation and can classify types of contacts by where they were acquired and whether they are leads or possible strategic partners?

Most CRM solutions should be able to meet your needs, as leads or contacts can typically be tied to a campaign/source and workflow is automated according to the filters you provide. That being said, the next question would be what type of CRM you're looking at: are you a small business or do you need an enterprise-size CRM solution? Off the top of my head, tools that should provide what you're looking for are MS Dynamics CRM, SAP CRM, Zoho CRM, and SugarCRM.

I don't know if you need a full-blown CRM, but ZohoAconex, and Maximizer CRM both have contact management and workflow automation. As for being able to customize the way in which you classify contacts, they should all give you the ability to do that, though I can't speak from experience.
